Tips to Make Working from Home More Effective
You are finally at the point in your career where you are going to be your own boss. The only problem is figuring out you’re going to hold yourself accountable by creating a weekly schedule.
You have worked hard in your 9-5 job, all while doing photography on the side to get to this point right here! Now you get to do the work you have always wanted to do and have the passion for. And the best part, you get to be your own boss in your own home!
However, making the switch from your 9-5 job to working from home…
is not as easy as you had hoped.
You are so used to the structure and routine that you had in your old job, but it’s not transitioning the way you thought it would.
What you need is for your boss (YOU!!) to create that structure with creating a weekly schedule. That is exactly what we have for you in this video. We have tips and advice for how we were able to
make that switch, and work from home.
We will be the first to tell you, it was not easy. Trial and error with what we found out worked for us, and we hope that our errors, success, and these tips to help you and your business.
Tip 1 – Make a commitment for the morning
For us, that was changing gym memberships that forced us into going. We have had general memberships, and we were not making time to going and getting our money’s worth. We joined Orange Theory Fitness, which forced us to scheduling classes, putting them on our calendar, and going to the gym. Because if we didn’t, it was lost money.
This in turn helped us get our day started, as well as establish a routine. We were no longer going to the gym when it fit into our schedule. We now had a physical reminder in our calendar to hold us accountable for our health, work schedule, and routine.
Tip 2 – Have daily tasks to accomplish
We tried having specific tasks for days of the week. For example, Monday is for blogging, Tuesday is for accounting, etc. This did not work for us. Our schedule was not consistent, as things change on a day-to-day basis, so we could not establish this into our schedule. Instead, we plan according to our calendar and creates tasks that need to be completed by the end of specific days.
Tip 3 – Use backward planning to creating a weekly schedule
Using the information from Tip 2, you backward plan with the schedule on your calendar. Have an end goal in mind, and then plan how you reach that goal. Do this by listing out all of major tasks going on your calendar, and then write out the subtasks that need to be completed for each of these tasks. Once all of the tasks are written out, you can create a schedule for each of the subtasks that need to be completed in order to complete the major task on time. Simply enough, creating an organized “To-Do List” will make you in charge of your schedule, not the other way around.
Monthly calendars that are visible in your office has been extremely helpful for us. Our calendar has our major tasks written down on the date it is due (weddings, engagements, maternity sessions, etc.) We then also have a shared calendar of all tasks going on in our life (not just business) on our phones. This allows us to add things that each of us are doing within our parts of the business and household.
We hope this helps you and your business and staying organized. Creating a weekly schedule is never ending task, but also a task that needs to be done consistently to hold everyone and everything in your business accountable.
